Botox

Botox is a medicine produced by a protein which in turn is produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacteria. Botox is used for many purposes and works by weakening overactive muscles.

This weakening of overactive muscles produces a smoothing effect on wrinkles. This positive effect has been used within medical sector to treat overactive muscles for CP sufferers or to treat weakening overactive eye muscles. Botox is also used to help those with overactive sweat glands in the hand or arms.

Within the plastic surgery industry we have recently started using Botox to reduce worry wrinkles between the eyebrows or pronounced vertical lines on the forehead. This drug can also be used on overactive muscles around the eyes, mouth and neck muscles.
Extremely small doses are injected into the target muscles which then become inactive for between two and six months after which time muscle activity begins again. A new injection can then be given.
Despite the use of Botox for many years no serious side effects have been discovered. If an excessive dose is injected this has only resulted in temporary weakening of adjacent muscles.
